What is Landmine University?
Landmine University (LMU) is a structured training system that uses the so-called landmine (half barbell) as its main tool. LMU in general is functional training aimed at increasing explosiveness and resistance training in patterns using the body's natural rotations .
Even though the landmine, commonly known as the half-barbell, is nothing new in gyms (the first ''landmines'' were included in American gym equipment in the mid-1980s) and today we can find it in many well-equipped clubs, until recently its training potential remained largely undiscovered.
In recent years, former wrestler and American football player, and current motor preparation coach, founder of Landmine University - Alex Kanellis - began to change the way we think about landmine training , giving this tool a completely new face.
Discover a system that bridges the gap between classic weightlifting and sport-specific training that utilizes rotational patterns and locomotion elements.
Power from rotation - sporting success
The philosophy of Landmine University draws on the so-called Spinal Engine theory popularized in the 1980s by Prof. Serge Gracovetsky of Concordia University in Montreal.
Briefly speaking, this theory assumes that the main drive of the musculoskeletal system is our spine and its rotation, which initiates locomotion .
He suggested that understanding and optimizing spine movement could help improve motor efficiency in humans.
Use the spinal engine
Maximize your training potential by introducing natural body rotation under the barbell and weights.
Generate and distribute power optimally by understanding how the spinal engine works.
Train to develop skills and attributes specific to your chosen disciplines, including:
- rotational force,
- stability,
- effective transfer of power .
Who is this workshop for?
- trainers,
who want to develop their training skills and train their players more effectively
- players,
who use explosive power
- fitness enthusiasts,
who want to be more fit and are looking for new training challenges

What will you learn?
During the all-day workshop, you will learn the Landmine University methodology, i.e. the use of the so-called half-barbell to effectively develop explosive power . In addition to the necessary theoretical part, the workshop will be divided into practical blocks dedicated to individual movement patterns.
- Screwdriver Series
- Jerk Series
- Clean Series
- Clean & Jerk Series
- Split Snatch Series
- Advanced applications
- Alternative trainers
This intense day will leave you with new skills and open your eyes to countless possibilities of using them in your own training or that of your clients.
You may also discover weak links you were not aware of and want to introduce LMU training into your routine to enjoy greater fitness and coordination as a result.
Olympic weightlifting and the preparation of athletes
The starting point for Landmine University exercises are classic movements used in Olympic weightlifting such as the clean, jerk and snatch, which are undoubtedly an excellent training tool for developing power and are today commonly used in motor preparation training for athletes of many disciplines, where the explosive expression of strength in the shortest possible time is important.
Slow pace of learning
One of the problems with introducing weightlifting elements into the resistance training of non-weightlifting athletes is the learning curve . Trainees must spend a considerable amount of time perfecting their technique before they are able to utilize the full potential of these exercises.
Little time, a lot to do
A major challenge for a coach in preparing athletes for motor skills is teaching them how to correctly and safely perform movement patterns when they only have a group of athletes at their disposal, for example, for 1 hour twice a week. The coach must be sure that they are maximizing every minute of time with their charges and not spending too much of it on introducing overly complicated movement patterns into the already tight training schedule of their charges. This is where Landmine U comes in handy, a system that has proven to be able to provide results similar to double-team exercises in terms of developing explosive power, with a more accessible teaching methodology for athletes.
Movement patterns similar to those from the world of sports
Practice has shown that the rotational movement patterns used in LMU are more intuitive for athletes to perform because they are based on the same body positions and stances used by athletes on the pitch, court, mat or ring. As a result, the learning time necessary to safely master the full potential of this training tool is often shorter.
a real way to measure progress
Improving your clean and snatch results gives you measurable and quantifiable proof of your training. By doing these exercises with the landmine, you are able to measure your progress in exactly the same way, while also adding rotational patterns that reflect the realities of throwing and striking in your discipline.
Children and Youth and Resistance Training
Training for kids?
The Landmine U system is an excellent tool for introducing resistance training elements from an early age.
Due to the lower direct load on the exerciser (the barbell is anchored with one end on the ground, so the perceived weight is much smaller) and the low level of exercise complexity, we can introduce explosive and coordination movement patterns with minimal load.
In recent years, we have observed significant development and popularization of knowledge in the field of general strength training for athletes and the role it can play in increasing performance during competitions.
There are more and more conscious trainers on the market who offer motor preparation to beginner athletes and general development training focused on a chosen discipline.
Landmine University Certified Coach
Hello, my name is Dawid Mazur
I am a Level 2 instructor of Landmine University, a trainer, a member of Top Team Kettlebells Polska and an equipment designer in the STreZ team. I have been involved in strength training and combat sports for many years – especially BJJ, boxing, muay thai.
My interest in LMU is the result of years of searching for training solutions that will intuitively translate into true functionality in the full sense of the word, i.e. practical use outside the gym walls.
In previous years I was very closely involved in various systems such as CrossFit or Hardstyle Kettlebells, but it was Landmine University that turned out to be the missing piece of the puzzle for me in recent years, which I want to share with you.
